First Place: Teaching Green
Team Name:
The Think Tank
Team Members: Ian Ashcroft-Williams, Matthew Bernstine, Miguel Boa, and LeeLee Brown

The Think Tank's design "Teaching Green" was chosen as this year's EGB San Francisco Natural Talent Design Comp winning design because of its holistic approach to the Pier 70 neighborhood, which engages the site at community and commercial levels in addition to environmental sustainability. The design's strength is in seeking to improve not only the environmental quality of the surrounding neighborhood but also the social and economic livelihood, by teaching the community about the importance of natural resources. The team took an innovative approach to using renewable energy and resources by taking advantage of the site's access to sun, wind, and rainwater. By incorporating a variety of community parks and gardens, the team connected to nature in an urban environment. The Think Tank Team included Ian Ashcroft-Williams, Matthew Bernstine, Miguel Boa, and LeeLee Brown.

2009 Challenge: Sacramento

This year's Sacramento competition challenge project will be located on the campus of Cosumnes River College. Entrants will design a 36,000 square foot building known as the Winn Center for Construction and Architecture and an Educational Facility. The new building should be integrated with the existing Technology Area Complex. The building will be designed to be LEED Certified and used as both a model and a living laboratory to celebrate sustainable environmental design. The building should express and inspire creativity while relating to the campus theme. It should be significant in form and character as the gateway to the campus and as a model for good architecture and construction detailing. See the complete Sacramento Design Challenge.

First Place: The Winn Center: A Breath of Fresh Air
Team Name: ecoARCH
Team Members: Nathan Dea, Barry Gonsalves, and Alex Villalobos
Through the use of natural and sustainable materials, the new Winn center strives to be that “breath of fresh air” as a bright, glassy, welcoming presence on the east entrance of campus. The emphasis placed on the community center, raised up over the berm, shows its importance, and makes it an iconic symbol for the community, which the college is a center of. The center courtyard serves as a place of gathering, as well as a vent to bring in fresh air and release hot air. Every space is lit by natural daylighting, and is self regulating - bringing in cool air from below and venting it from above.
