Alex Spilger, USGBC-NCC Faculty Member
Alex SpilgerAlex Spilger is Principal and Founder of GreenStep: Education for the Built Environment and teaches LEED workshops for organizations throughout the Bay Area. He draws from his experience working on over two dozen green building projects to offer practical and engaging workshops designed to prepare you pass the test with confidence - the first time. Alex's experience includes facilitating eco-charrettes, researching green building technologies and policy, and managing both the people and the processes involved with taking projects through LEED Certification. Alex is an active member of USGBC-NCC and serves on the USGBC Corresponding Committee for LEED EBOM. In addition to leading green building courses, he works with BCCI Construction; helping to educate staff, develop internal tools and systems, and facilitate the LEED documentation efforts on several projects. He is also founding board member of GreenLaces.org, a non-profit committed to leveraging the visibility and influence of athletics to create positive change for the planet. Alex is a LEED Accredited Professional, Certified Green Building Professional, AIA Continuing Education Provider, HERS Rater and holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from UCLA. When not advising on green building projects or facilitating workshops, Alex can be found swimming in the San Francisco Bay, biking through the Marin Headlands or playing guitar on his deck in Sausalito where he makes his home.

Alex specializes in teaching Exam Preparation workshops for USGBC-NCC, and is noted for being one of the highest quality instructors of this field.

Reviews for Alex Spilger

"Alex is the sole reason I passed the LEED Exam. Without Alex’s tutelage, I would not have been able to pass this difficult test. He was instrumental in helping me understand the fundamentals and achieve proficiency with the LEED Rating System."
                                     -    Garrett Johnson, Assistant Project Manager, Plant Construction

“Alex, our five staffers that took your class have all taken the exam and passed.  We are 5 for 5.  As the leader of our company, I knew the day was well worth the investment when we finished up.   But the results speak for themselves.  We can’t wait to get our feet wet in real world applications.  Thanks again for helping our staff down the path of accreditation.”
                                     -  P. Verdicchio, LEED AP, SEC Planning

"Alex’s teaching style is concise yet engaging.  He has a wide breadth of knowledge about the LEED rating system and is eager to pass this along to his students.  His class was a valuable learning tool that helped me pass the LEED-NC exam on my first try."
                                     - Karen Buse, Architect

“Alex Spilger’s practical knowledge and first-hand experience make him an engaging and effective LEED instructor.  The real-world examples provided in class opened up the full range of challenges and opportunities for building under LEED guidelines in ways that the reference guide alone could not.  I highly recommend Alex as an instructor”
                                     - Maureen Ladley, Real Estate Strategy Consultant

“Alex has a great energy which comes across in his presentations and a solid knowledge of LEED and sustainable building design.  You will have fun and learn at the same time.”
                                     - James Lacy, Senior Electrical Engineer, Caltrans

“Without reservation, I recommend Alex’s ability to provide LEED information and exam preparation for LEED professional accreditation. Beginning with a minimal level of knowledge, I successfully passed the exam two weeks after the course.”
                                     - Lester G. Meu, Architect, CSI, CCS, CCCA, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP

“Alex tells you what you need to know for the test, while preparing you to take the lead on a LEED project. He balanced the short term results I was seeking with the long term knowledge I needed. Alex's patience and diplomacy in answering my tough questions was much appreciated. I recommend him.”
                                     -   L. Gomes, LEED AP Legacy, Carollo Engineers

“I just took the exam and passed with a score of 181!  As an architect and attorney, I'm a veteran of many licensing exams and associated prep classes. I must tell you, your course is one of the very best I've taken. It was very concise and well focused, with great exam-specific content. I was able to prepare effectively solely from the materials you provided. I would heartily recommend your course to anyone hoping to obtain a passing score.   Many thanks.”
                                     -  R. Reiss, esq. AIA NCARB LEED AP

“I amazed myself by passing the v2.2 NC exam with a 182 on Saturday, the day after having taken your workshop.  Prior to attending the NC Exam Training Workshop I was at best only hopeful that I would past the test.  The following morning, on the day of the test, I woke up with a overall sense of confidence which I can't recall ever having prior to a test. This sense of confidence and the ability to pass with such a high score can only be attributed to having taken your exam preparation course.  Thank you for giving such a valuable workshop.”
                                   -  R. Joe, CSBA, LEED AP, Sustainable Contra Costa County
