Sacramento Habitat for Humanity Dedicates 200th Home |
Community members gather for LEED Certified, Milestone Home Dedication
Sacramento Habitat for Humanity and Sacramento community members recently gathered to celebrate their 200th home dedication and the fourth and final home completed in Sacramento Habitat for Humanity’s first multi-home development.
The development, located on Forrest Street in north Sacramento, includes four 1-story, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom single family detached homes. These are the first homes constructed by Sacramento Habitat for Humanity to achieve LEED for Homes Gold. “Striving to achieve LEED Certification and incorporate new green building measures while maintaining affordability simply would not be possible without the community of volunteers and trade partners,” said Dan Wilson, Director of Construction.
The new homeowners, Habtemichael Woldegiorgis and his wife Belayuesh Feleke, have been married for eleven years and emigrated from Ethiopia in 2006. They have a nine year old son, Yeshrun. Their 26-year-old niece Helen also lives with them in their one bedroom apartment. Habtemichael and Belayuesh are also expecting a baby in April 2010.
Many homeowners cannot afford the down payment needed to buy a home. Sacramento Habitat for Humanity requires 500 hours of work, or sweat equity, from every family. Once the home is built, the homeowner makes house payments, pays property taxes, insurance premiums, utilities and maintenance costs just as any homeowner would.
Because of the generosity of donors and volunteers, Sacramento Habitat for Humanity is able to build homes at a lower cost; helping to make the dream of home ownership real for people who previously didn't believe they could ever have a place of their own.
Since 1985, Sacramento Habitat for Humanity has changed lives by providing families with decent, affordable housing in a safe environment to grow and thrive.
