A Panel of speakers will be reviewing the general legal structure of SB375 and CALGreen and how they are shaping local development.

As the Co-Chair of the Land Use Practice Group and Chair of it’s Appellate Practice Group, Art Coon guides clients through a broad range of real property, land use and environmental matters.His areas of expertise include land use, environmental law, the law of public agencies, extraordinary writs, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Art also counsels and advocates for clients who have matters in front of administrative bodies.

Matt Vander Sluis, Senior Field Representative, East Bay, Greenbelt Alliance
Matt oversees Greenbelt Alliance’s advocacy and public education campaigns across the East Bay of the San Francisco region, working to protect 110,000 acres of threatened open space and ensure that our cities and towns grow in ways that create great neighborhoods for everyone.
Previously, Matt worked for state and federal non-profits to forge policies that link climate change and development. His work has been covered in a variety of media outlets including the Atlantic Monthly, Capitol Public Radio, and the Los Angeles Times.

Bob Simmons, Walnut Creek City Council
Bob served on Walnut Creek’s Park, Recreation and Open Space Commission and the Planning Commission before he was elected to the City Council in 2008. Bob also served as President of the Walnut Creek Open Space Foundation for two years. In 2012, Bob served as Mayor and was re-elected to a second four year term on the City Council. In addition to being on the City Council, Bob is certified as a Master Gardener and is a mediator with the Congress of Neutrals, specializing in Civil Harassment mediations. Bob is also on the boards for Sustainable Walnut Creek and the Trinity Center. Bob worked with many others in the successful effort to purchase the highest point in Acalanes Ridge Open Space, and is currently chair of the Walnut Creek Watershed Council.

Eric Corey Freed gives us the “Attack of the Dodo-Sapiens:” his current 2013 presentation about innovative new models for sustainable development.

Our way of life is killing us. Whether by tradition or habit, the human race does some silly things that hurt us all in the long term. Our cities, buildings and surroundings have been designed around abundant and cheap oil, but now we have painted ourselves into a corner and are stuck there.

The next generation of buildings will have to do better than just energy efficiency and recycled materials. Our lack of foresight has made our building toxic, wasteful and unaffordable. Simply "being less bad" isn't enough and will delay our progress for generations. In order to undo the damage of the past, we need innovative, new models for how to build deep green, bio-based buildings.

This brand new talk is "bullet-point free" (no boring, text heavy slides used). Using rich graphics and video, this presentation will expand your imagination and and provide you a list of actions to take into your own community.

Acclaimed speaker, Eric Corey Freed, LEED AP, Hon. FIGP, is Principal of organicARCHITECT, an architecture and consulting firm in California, with 20 years of experience in green building. He is the author of four books, including "Green Building & Remodeling for Dummies", a bestseller with over 200,000 copies in print, and "Sustainable School Architecture." His latest, “Green$ense for your Home” won the 2011 Outstanding Book Award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Eric is considered a leader in the field; named by San Francisco Magazine "Best Green Architect" in 2005; "Best Visionary" in 2007; and "Green Visionary" by 7x7 Magazine in 2008.

We have been a USGBC NCC Branch for 5 years now and we would like to do a public outreach to share with the Silicon Valley sustainable community what our initial goals have been and how close we think we've gotten to meeting them.

As a volunteer organization we want to make sure we are meeting your expectations as a Branch. We would like to use the the charrette model to have a conversation, get input from you with an intensive planning session where you the citizens, designers, builders, all stakeholders collaborate with us on a vision for future development.

We want to provide this forum to garner your ideas and offer you the unique advantage of giving immediate feedback to us, the Branch Steering Committee. More importantly, it allows you to participate and be a mutual author of the Branch's plan for our NEXT 5 years.
