Learn about the new California Green Building Code and how it will impact commercial developers and development from Panama Bartholomy (Advisor to the Chairwoman of the California Energy Commission and Chapter Board Vice President).
Learn how a successful commercial developer faces the challenges to building green in today’s struggling economy from Derek “Deke” Hunter of Hunter Properties. Deke will discuss the issues developers face as it relates to LEED requirements of Bay Area cities, the costs and return on investment to build sustainable projects, whether tenants are embracing green buildings and what effects the current economy has on developers who want to build green. Hunter Properties is currently constructing the @First Street mixed-use project in north San Jose, when completed, will have over a1,000,000 s.f. of Class A office, 81,000 s.f. of restaurants and retail, a grocery store, 168 room Sierra Suites Hotel and a 225 room premier hotel and health club.

Hunter Properties
Derek "Deke" Hunter, Jr. is the President of Hunter Properties, Inc. and Managing Member of Hunter/Storm, LLC. Hunter Properties. Originally founded in 1960 as Demmon-Hunter, they became well-known throughout the region for build-to-suits that helped define Silicon Valley. Joining with Storm Land Co. in 1986, they developed in excess of 4.5 million s.f. including over 35 retail centers. Today they own 17 different assets totaling 2,100,000 s.f.. Mr. Hunter is involved with all new project developments, property management and leasing. He is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, Urban Land Institute, Self Storage Association, Policy Advisory Committee for Fisher Center of Real Estate & Urban Economics and the No. California Chapter of the National Resource Defense Council. He is a graduate of the University of the Pacific with a degree in Business and Public Administration, concentrating in real estate finance.
Panama Bartholomy Advisor to the Chairwoman
California Energy Commission
Panama is a graduate of Humboldt State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Restorative Development and a Masters of Science in Community Development from UC Davis. He is an advisor for Karen Douglas, the Chairman at the CA Energy Commission where he advises her on climate change, land use, renewable energy, transmission, green building, and biofuels policy. He serves on the City of Sacramento’s Planning Commission and the County of Sacramento’s Environmental Commission. He is a board member on and Vice-President of the Northern California Chapter of the United States Green Building Council and the Humboldt Bay Center for Sustainable Living. He previously worked for the California Conservation Corps on vocational environmental education and the Division of the State Architect where he ran the Sustainable Schools program.
