A discussion on the challenges two unique projects faced on their road to LEED Certification.  The Granary, a LEED Gold Project, is a lasting symbol of a once fully self-sustaining community.  Moffett Towers is an example of how sustainability and achieving LEED certification effect on site planning and building design, as well as the overall effect on architectural expression.

Lesley L. Miles, AIA, LEED AP, President
Lesley Miles
With more that 20 years experience in Architecture, Lesley Miles and her partner, Charles Weston, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, have focused their design firm towards sustainability for the past 10 years. In the 1970’s, she worked in the field of Sustainable Agriculture, working in Guatemala teaching bio-intensive farming. This background in understanding sustainable systems and re-use of materials has provided a unique approach toward sustainability.

The firms’ first LEED Certified project, a Joint-Use Public School and Neighborhood Center in San Jose, CA, was started in 2002 and certified in 2006. The project was constructed using Insulated Concrete forms, a challenging project given the Division of State Architects stringent standards. The Project just won the Insulated Concrete Form Project of the year. She is currently managing the Santa Clara County Office of Educations’ $60 million dollar new school program focused on designing Sustainable schools and CHPS program.

Their second LEED Certified project is their office, a LEED Gold project in Morgan Hill, CA, certified in 2007. The project received the California Redevelopment Agency Award of Excellence in 2006 and was developed, designed and constructed by Ms. Miles and Mr. Weston. The re-use of the historic Granary and the resulting re-work established both a high level of sustainability but also involved very creative uses of materials and spaces.

Ms. Miles has been actively involved in the Morgan Hill community as the President of the Morgan Hill Downtown Association and a board member for the past 20 years.
