2009 has been a year of great economic turmoil, yet there is great
optimism in Silicon Valley for the future. Silicon Valley is where the
unique convergence of creative energy, venture capital, educational and
technical infrastructure and innovative people from many cultures
allows it to continually reinvent itself to brew tomorrow’s ideas into
reality.
USGBC-NCC Silicon Valley Branch has asked key representatives of the
best of the Valley to express their vision for the future of our
region, our nation and our world as it relates to their perspectives on
what has been happening and what needs to be happening in the green
building / clean tech movement. Come join us to see the vision.
Please note, the typical Monday deadline is moved to Friday due to the Labor Day Weekend.

Carl Guardino, President & CEO Silicon Valley Leadership Group
Carl
Guardino, one of Silicon Valley’s most distinguished business and
community leaders, is the President and CEO of the Silicon Valley
Leadership Group. Carl is known throughout the region as leader on
public policy, a champion of civic and charitable causes, and a
consensus builder. His impact on Silicon Valley is evident in its
transportation network, its housing – and the number of people who bike
to work, a favorite cause of Carl’s as he can be found on a bicycle
more often than in a car.
The Leadership Group is a public policy trade association that
represents more than 300 of Silicon Valley’s most respected companies.
Its efforts in the field of green building have led to agreement among
all 15 cities in Santa Clara County on green building standards, and a
commitment to make their municipal buildings green. Guardino has been
the chief executive since 1997. In 2000, the San Jose Mercury News
named him one of the “Five Most Powerful” people in Silicon Valley, in
a once-per-decade study.
Carl also serves on numerous other boards and is actively involved in a wide range of community organizations and projects.
Abe Yokell, Principal, RockPort Capital
Abe’s interest in startups began after spending a summer at a venture-backed diagnostics company as a business development intern. He subsequently joined Analysis Group, an economic and management consultancy. Abe then joined RockPort as an Associate, having previously interned at RockPort for a summer, and is active in all aspects of RockPort’s activities. He has worked on deal teams for investments in solar, water, transportation, green buildings, the smart grid, efficiency, wind, lighting, and advanced materials, among other sectors. He helped spearhead the opening of RockPort’s Menlo Park office, and is a frequent panelist and judge at industry conferences and business plan competitions. Abe graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where he studied Economics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Kevin Surace – President & CEO Serious Materials
As
CEO of Serious Materials, Kevin leads the company in its mission to
reduce energy usage and CO2 generation of the world’s largest
contributor, our buildings. By developing new materials and processes
that require little energy to manufacture, and advanced products which
dramatically improve the insulation and comfort of homes and offices, a
worst-case climate and energy catastrophe can be avoided.
Before joining Serious Materials in 2002, Mr. Surace held executive and
technical positions with Perfect Commerce, General Magic, Air
Communications, National Semiconductor, and Seiko-Epson. He received
his degree in electrical engineering technology from Rochester
Institute of Technology where he currently serves on the Board of
Trustees, and has been awarded multiple patents. Mr. Surace also serves
on the boards of FreeLight, Array Converter, Zeta Communities, and
Integrity Block; chairs the Sunnyvale Mayoral Green Ribbon Committee;
and co-chaired the CCTO Building Materials contest.
