Call for Nominations for the 2015 USGBC-Northern California Chapter Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of the U.S. Green Building Council - Northern California Chapter (USGBC-NCC) is calling for nominations for three Directors starting in January 2015 to be elected by the Chapter Membership. Each position is a two-year term ending December 2016. Four current Board of Directors members will serve through their second year, and two open positions will be appointed by the Board. Members can nominate themselves as candidates.

USGBC-Northern California Chapter

The green building industry, USGBC, and the Northern California Chapter have grown and developed dramatically over the past several years. The Chapter’s vision, programs, scope, and influence have deepened in concert with the accelerating adoption and expansion of green building practices.

As we move from 2014, the Chapter is developing plans for launching the second year of the Building Health Initiative and beyond to continue our thought and industry leadership throughout Northern California and the U.S.A.

We seek industry leaders and executives who will help lead the organization to increase our impact in the green building movement, expand and engage our membership, and continue to build a strong and vibrant organization.

Board of Directors Responsibilities

The USGBC Bylaws identify the following general responsibilities:

  • To supervise, control and direct the affairs of the Chapter, its committees and activities
  • To elect the Chapter Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer
  • To actively pursue the Chapter’s objectives and supervise the disbursement of its funds
  • To adopt a policy on conflicts of interest
  • To take such actions as may be necessary to conduct the organization including but not limited to adopting rules and regulations for the conduct of its business as shall be deemed advisable, establishing policies from time to time, and delegating certain authority and responsibility to the Executive Committee.

Other basic responsibilities:

The National Center for Nonprofit Boards describes the following basic responsibilities which are also germane for assessing needs and qualifications for the Chapter Board:

  • Determine the organization’s mission and purposes
  • Select the Executive Director or Chief Executive if one exists
  • Support the Executive Director or Chief Executive and assess his/her performance
  • Ensure effective organizational planning
  • Ensure adequate resources and help raise the funds necessary implementing the organization’s plans
  • Manage resources effectively
  • Determine, monitor, and strengthen the organization’s programs and services
  • Enhance the organization’s public standing
  • Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability
  • Recruit and orient new board members and assess board performance.

Minimum Qualifications for Nomination

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

Industry Perspective Requirement

For the 2015 elected Directors, we require candidates who bring experience, insight and expertise in three particular industry perspectives to provide a diverse set of insights and experience that complement our current Board composition and meet the needs of our strategy moving forward. In this election, there are 3 categories of perspectives in which candidates can be nominated.

  1. Design/Build, i.e. Architect, Engineer, Contractor/Builder, Sub-Contractor
  2. Clean Tech, such as various forms of renewable energy, emerging building technologies or systems, software, start-ups, or others
  3. Buildings and Human Health, i.e. strong background and expertise in the health impacts of the built environment, including materials, indoor air quality, or related issues.

Regional & Branch Outreach

Participation from candidates with Branch experience, whose regions within the Chapter are not currently represented on the Board of Directors, is strongly encouraged. Regions are not defined as a required perspective; but they may coincide with perspectives defined above. For 2015, we particularly encourage nominations from candidates in the Monterey Bay Peninsula/Santa Cruz area, Mt. Diablo/East Bay, and Sacramento regions.

Composition of the Board

USGBC NCC Bylaws provide for a Board of Directors consisting of 7 to 15 members, of which no more than 75% may be appointed.  The current size is 9 Directors. Four standing Board of Director members will serve through their second year, and two open positions will be appointed by the Board.

Guidelines for Candidate Campaigns

All nominated candidates will have their application materials posted on the election webpage that will be available to voting members.

Nominated candidates or their supporters may create and maintain, at their own expense, internet addresses in support of candidates; however, they may not use the Internet or email to transmit unsolicited messages or any other communication to individuals who did not request such information from the candidate.  Such Internet addresses will also be provided to the Nominating Committee at the time of their creation.  Also note that a candidate may not write campaign letters except to members of the Board.  Persons or organizations other than the candidate may write such letters, which may contain a printed biography of the candidates.  And, candidates may answer questions and respond directly to an inquiry from a member.

Violations of these guidelines, as determined by the Nominations Committee, may result in disqualification.

Write-in Candidates

Chapter members may vote for a write-in candidate(s) during the election period by adding a name(s) to the ballot. Write-in candidates are not part of the slate put before the membership by the Nominating Committee and cannot be represented as such; nor is the Chapter obligated to distribute any informational material on write-in candidates on its website or in any Write-in candidates are subject to the same membership requirements and campaign guidelines described above relating to internet and other communications. They must also have submitted the required documentation prior to the start of the election period. Exceptions to this may be made at the discretion of the Nominating Committee.

About Voting

The right to vote in USGBC-NCC elections is an individual rather than corporate right. Each Chapter Member in good standing (as of Midnight, October 6, 2014) will have the opportunity to cast their own vote. In accordance with Chapter bylaws, no more than three Board members may share the same Chapter Membership Industry Sector Category (i.e. if two architects continue to serve on the Board, no more than one additional architect may be elected during this cycle.)

Voting will be conducted electronically and anonymously. Instructions will be emailed to Chapter Members on October 6.

2. Read and agree to abide by USGBC's Conflict of Interest Policy and the Chapter's Board Member Code of Conduct Agreement.

LEED v4 Integrative Design Process


LEED V4 Integrative Design Process

The current status quo for sustainable design projects has the building staff, auditor/engineer, architect, contractor and others working in silos. Traditional project delivery processes tend to be fragmented, and oftentimes systems synergies are realized when it’s too late or costly.

An entirely new credit category within LEED v4, the Integrative Process requires early analysis of energy, site, and water systems to inform design. This class will dive into the requirements of the LEED BD+C v4 Integrative Process credit and what project teams must do to incorporate it into their projects. Drawing from project experience, the presenter will also discuss the intent and benefits of an integrative process—both from a building systems analysis standpoint as well as a team structure and collaboration standpoint.

By promoting this analysis before the completion of schematic design, LEED v4 encourages the exploration of sustainable design, construction and ongoing operations at project inception, rather than on the construction site or during occupancy when changes become increasingly expensive and complex. The process also encourages the analysis and discovery of systems interrelationships to achieve a more profitable real estate investment. In addition, the Integrative Process promotes early collaboration between the entire project team. By involving normally marginalized team members and stakeholders early in the design process, project teams are able to utilize the best of each team members’ expertise and drive value throughout the project in order to exponentially increase high performing building achievements without the premium cost.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to document and achieve the LEED v4 Integrative Process credits
  • Understand the benefits of the LEED v4 Integrative Process credits from the standpoints of early team collaboration and building component synergies
  • Learn examples from the field on how an integrative process can increase sustainability achievements that would have otherwise been overlooked
  • Understand how an integrative process can save time, money and lower project risks

Michael Hummel, Licensed Architect, LEED AP+ Sr. Sustainability Consultant, Environmental Building Strategies
Michael Hummel is a licensed Architect and General Contractor in the state of California with a background in high performance buildings, efficiency analysis, project management and passive/active building systems integration. As a sustainability focused professional, Michael provides useful and real-world green solutions. His experience ranges the full gamut from green development charrette facilitation, LEED project management, and project delivery problem solving for both new construction and existing building clients.

Michael attended the University of Hawaii Architecture Program where he developed a solid multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving. This methodology includes strong skills and experience in the fields of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction, as well as interpersonal relationship building that promote exceptional synergy in the building delivery process. He has extensive experience with new construction and existing buildings and his diverse portfolio includes a wide spectrum of projects ranging from Government, Hospitality, Office, Commercial, Education, Tennant Improvement, as well as Single and Multi-Family Residential.

Michael is committed to furthering the work of high performance, environmentally sensitive building development, and his systems thinking approach to collaboration and communication, and his commitment to client needs makes him a valuable asset on every sustainability project.

Janika McFeely, AIA, LEED® AP BD+C Associate / Sustainability Specialist at ehdd
Janika McFeely, AIA brings to ehdd an extensive research background in sustainable design issues in addition to her architectural qualifications. Since joining the firm in 2007, Janika has been an integral member of design teams for numerous high performance projects including the Net Zero Energy Certified David and Lucile Packard Foundation in Los Altos, CA and the Lands End Lookout and Visitor Center in San Francisco, CA. She has directed the LEED certification process for all office projects, which include a wide range of building typologies – from exhibit-related and educational facilities to civic and commercial environments. As ehdd’s Associate Sustainability Specialist, Janika leverages her capacity to manage complex projects with her passion for sustainability to help guide all projects in the office in identifying and implementing sustainability goals.

The approximately $4.5 billion project will replace the former Transbay Terminal at First and Mission streets in San Francisco.

As a critical component of the Bay Area regional public transportation network, the Transbay Transit Center Program contributes greatly to the regional sustainability goal of alternative public transportation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Bay Area Living Building Challenge Collaborative Event

The Living Building Challenge is coming to the Bay Area! Please join local sustainability leaders for a special event exploring the growth of the Living Building Challenge in San Francisco. The Institute's Amanda Sturgeon and Rochelle Routman of Mohawk Industries will be the keynote speakers. Mohawk wholly embraces product transparency, as evidenced by its Declare Labels, HPDs, and EPDs that support the bulk of its commercial product line. Additionally, Mohawk is connecting and educating others about the Living Building Challenge through the Institute's Ambassador Network and Living Building Challenge workshops throughout North America in 2014.

Amanda Sturgeon, Vice President of the Living Building Challenge, LEED Fellow, FAIA. Amanda is a licensed architect with fifteen years experience designing and managing some of the most sustainable buildings in the Pacific Northwest. Prior to joining ILBI she was a Senior Associate at Perkins+Will where she co-directed the Sustainable Design Initiative across 20 offices worldwide and managed numerous sustainable projects. Amanda was a founding board member of the Cascadia Region Green Building Council and a recent board member of AIA Seattle. Amanda won the Betterbricks Architect award in 2008 and has been involved in leading many local committees for USGBC and AIA. She has a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Sydney, Australia and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Amanda was born in England, grew up in Australia and has lived in the United States since 1996.

Rochelle Routman is Mohawk Industry’s Director of Sustainability, where she is joyfully leading the flooring division in its sustainability endeavors and assisting Mohawk’s customers in achieving their sustainability goals. Prior to joining Mohawk, she was employed in sustainability leadership positions in the electric utility and aeronautics industries, as well as public service. She holds a B.S. from UGA and an M.S. in Public Policy from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a registered Professional Geologist, a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, and a LEED Accredited Professional (O+M). Following graduate school, Rochelle led a neighborhood group which successfully acquired the funding which resulted in the preservation of a 30-acre greenspace, the Morningside Nature Preserve. Rochelle is currently a Member of the Board of Directors for both the Green Chamber of the South and Sustainable Atlanta, and also serves on the HPD Collaborative Manufacturers Advisory Panel (MAP).

Our buildings are victims. Within these facilities violations are occurring. The crimes include excessive energy use, dysfunctional controls, occupant discomfort and years of neglect. Fortunately all of these transgressions from optimized operation can be identified through the many clues left behind. Uncovering these clues and resolving the performance issues are the job of the building investigator. They may

be called a building operator, facility manager, energy auditor or commissioning provider, but the objective is the same: root out and resolve the problems plaguing our buildings. Using interactive examples and building forensics (measurement data, graphs, tables, photographs and calculations) this presentation will highlight the world of the Building Detective.

Commercial and residential buildings represent about 40% of U.S. energy consumption with about 95% of the projected energy to be consumed by buildings in 2020 coming from facilities operating today. Our statewide, national and global energy goals will not be met if we cannot better manage the energy use of our existing facilities. This presentation will include information on the challenge and savings potential represented by our existing building stock.

small orange ryan2Ryan Stroupe, Building Performance Program Coordinator, PG&E Pacific Energy Center
For the past 17 years Ryan Stroupe has been the Building Performance Program Coordinator at the Pacific Energy Center, a publicly-funded facility in San Francisco operated by Pacific Gas & Electric. He teaches classes and consults with building professionals on a variety of issues including architectural design, energy audits, building commissioning, monitoring protocols and measurement tool applications. Ryan oversees the PEC's Tool Lending Library, a free service that loans monitoring equipment to California energy customers. Also at the Center, Ryan has taught over 25 different classes on building measurement and energy-efficient design including a 6-day series on conducting energy audits for commercial buildings and a year-long intensive series on commissioning existing buildings.

Ryan has also taught for a number of colleges and universities including architecture courses at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco titled “Building Energy Systems” and “Energy Analysis”. He teaches a class titled “The Building Envelope” for UC Berkeley Extension and is a regular instructor for the Sustainable Building Advisor Program. Ryan has also taught for CSU-East Bay, Academy of Art University, Foothill College and DeAnza Community College. Ryan is actively involved with the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and has served as co-chair of the Northern California Chapter’s Green Building Resources Committee. Ryan is a LEED accredited professional (USGBC) and a Certified Energy Auditor (Association of Energy Engineers). He is a product of the Bachelors of Environmental Design program at Miami University (Ohio) and the Masters of Architecture program at U. C. Berkeley.
